Build a GraphQL Federation Schema for an E-Commerce Platform
Overview
What this challenge is about.
Receive the existing 22 REST endpoints' OpenAPI specs and a list of 5 priority subgraphs. Design a federated GraphQL schema using Apollo Federation v2 directives (@key, @external, @requires, @provides). Implement two subgraphs (User and Cart) in Node.js with Apollo Server, plus a federation router. Prove a real cart-checkout query (showing user info, cart items with product details, inventory availability) executes against the federated graph. Deliver the schema, two implemented subgraphs, the router config, a Postman collection demonstrating the query, and a 5-page rollout plan for the remaining 3 subgraphs.
The Brief
What you'll do, and what you'll demonstrate.
Design a 5-subgraph Apollo Federation v2 schema and prove the federated router serves a real cart-checkout query end-to-end.
Earning criteria — what you'll demonstrate
- Design a federated GraphQL schema across multiple bounded contexts
- Use Apollo Federation v2 directives correctly (@key, @requires, @provides)
- Implement subgraphs with Apollo Server in Node.js
- Reason about query planning and N+1 risks in federated graphs
