Overview
What this challenge is about.
Design a 4-phase migration: (1) add new columns + tables, dual-write on every workflow mutation, (2) backfill 3.4 TB in chunks of around 50k rows per minute with throttling and pause-on-replication-lag, (3) cutover read path per tenant via feature flag with shadow-read reconciliation, (4) decommission old columns after 14-day bake. Implement in TypeScript on the team's existing Node + Prisma stack. Run a full rehearsal on the staging environment seeded with around 400 GB of anonymized production data. Deliver migration scripts, reconciliation reports, a 6-page playbook, and a board-readable status dashboard.
The Brief
What you'll do, and what you'll demonstrate.
Migrate 11 tables across 3.4 TB of multi-tenant Postgres data with per-tenant cutover, zero downtime, and reversible at every phase.
Earning criteria — what you'll demonstrate
- Design a 4-phase expand-contract migration that is reversible at every step
- Backfill terabyte-scale tables without breaking replication lag SLOs
- Use shadow reads + feature flags to make cutover bounded and observable
- Document a migration playbook that the on-call team can run without authors
