Design a Production HTTP/2 Load Balancer Configuration

FreeVerified credential3 weeksIntermediate

Overview

What this challenge is about.

Design a multi-region topology: anycast edge -> regional Envoy clusters -> origin services. Specify HTTP/2 connection pooling (max connections per upstream, idle timeout), retry policy (idempotent only, capped at 2 retries, exponential backoff), and circuit-breaking thresholds. Write the full Envoy bootstrap config + per-service CDS / RDS overrides. Run a load test using vegeta or k6 with a captured 60-minute traffic profile (provided). Measure p50, p95, p99 latencies and error rates. Deliver config files, load-test report, 10-page rollout plan including rollback triggers.

The Brief

What you'll do, and what you'll demonstrate.

Design and configure a multi-region HTTP/2 load-balancing topology, validate with a realistic load test, and produce a rollout plan with rollback triggers.

Earning criteria — what you'll demonstrate

  • Configure HTTP/2 connection pooling and idle timeouts intentionally
  • Reason about retry and circuit-breaker policies for idempotent vs. non-idempotent traffic
  • Validate load-balancer configuration with realistic traffic profiles
  • Communicate rollout risk to platform-engineering stakeholders
