Migrate Stateful Workloads to StatefulSets with Storage Class Tuning
Overview
What this challenge is about.
Receive the current Redis Sentinel topology (3 nodes, ~120GB data), the EBS gp3 baseline performance requirements (3,000 IOPS, 125 MB/s), and the cluster (EKS 1.29 with the EBS CSI driver). Design StatefulSet + headless Service + PodDisruptionBudget + PVCs with the right storage class (gp3 with tuned IOPS + throughput, retain policy). Plan the cutover: snapshot the existing data, restore via volumeSnapshot CSI feature, configure Sentinel to point at the new cluster, validate with a 1-hour synthetic workload at production-equivalent QPS. Define the snapshot + DR policy (daily snapshot, cross-region copy, restore-time objective < 30 minutes), and validate by restoring from a snapshot into a parallel cluster. Deliver the StatefulSet + storage manifests, the cutover runbook, the DR validation report, the per-service playbook, and a 7-page platform-team write-up.
The Brief
What you'll do, and what you'll demonstrate.
Migrate a Redis Sentinel cluster from bare EC2 to EKS StatefulSets with tuned storage classes and a tested DR story, then produce the playbook for PostgreSQL + Elasticsearch.
Earning criteria — what you'll demonstrate
- Design StatefulSets with PVCs, PDBs, and the right storage class
- Tune EBS gp3 IOPS + throughput per workload
- Plan a cutover with snapshot-based data migration
- Define and validate a DR policy end-to-end
