Overview
What this challenge is about.
Receive a real switching procedure (anonymized: 14-step bay isolation), the safety regulation it references, and photos of the live substation bay. Build a Unity 6 + XR Interaction Toolkit prototype on Quest 3 reproducing the bay's switchgear, interlocks, and visual feedback. Implement: hand-tracked switch manipulation with realistic resistance, mandatory PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) check gate, error detection with replay, and a debrief panel. Run a 6-technician usability study (System Usability Scale + 3 task-completion metrics + qualitative debrief). Deliver: working prototype build, source repo, 8-page usability report, and a 5-page deployment business case.
The Brief
What you'll do, and what you'll demonstrate.
Prototype a VR substation-switching simulator validated with real technicians that proves training-time and safety-incident reductions.
Earning criteria — what you'll demonstrate
- Design a VR interaction loop that respects real-world procedural safety
- Implement hand-tracked manipulation with realistic affordances
- Run a System Usability Scale (SUS) study with a small expert sample
- Translate VR usability outcomes into a deployment business case
