Wireless Sensor-Network Design for a Vineyard Microclimate Study
Overview
What this challenge is about.
Spec the network: 60 LoRaWAN sensor nodes + 2 gateways (TheThingsStack indoor + outdoor gateway choice), star topology with possible relays. Node hardware: ESP32 + LoRa + sensor suite (BME280 for T/RH, capacitive soil-moisture probe, leaf-wetness sensor) + solar-charged Li-ion. Specify uplink schedule (every 15min, with adaptive data rate). Build 6 prototype nodes, deploy across 3 representative parcels for 2 weeks. Measure: packet-delivery ratio (PDR), node battery drain, gateway-coverage gaps. Deliver: hardware bill-of-materials, firmware repo, 6-page deployment plan covering all 12 parcels + gateway placement, field-validation report (4 pages).
The Brief
What you'll do, and what you'll demonstrate.
Design a LoRaWAN sensor network for 60-point microclimate monitoring across 12 vineyard parcels, validated on a 2-week 3-parcel pilot.
Earning criteria — what you'll demonstrate
- Design a LoRaWAN sensor network with realistic coverage + battery constraints
- Apply adaptive-data-rate techniques to extend node battery life
- Validate sensor-network designs with field deployment and measured PDR
- Specify gateway placement to maximize coverage across irregular terrain
