A sustainability consultant moves between regulatory frameworks (GHG Protocol scopes, IPCC scenarios) and the spreadsheets where carbon abatement decisions actually get made. The work ranges from auditing a client's Scope 3 emissions to modeling a marginal abatement cost curve that informs where they spend the next ten million on decarbonization.
Strong consultants resist greenwashing without alienating the operations leader they need as an ally. Tools like Python and Excel carry most of the modeling; tools like Claude help draft the deliverable. Students drawn to this path usually combine environmental conviction with comfort in finance or engineering.
